Isotretinoin (INN),also known as 13-cis-retinoic acid, is an oral pharmaceutical drug primarily used to treat severe nodular acne. Rarely, it is also used to prevent certain skin cancers (squamous-cell carcinoma), and in the treatment of other cancers. It is used to treat harlequin-type ichthyosis, a usually lethal skin disease, and lamellar ichthyosis. It is a retinoid, meaning it is related to vitamin A, and is found in small quantities naturally in the body. Its isomer, tretinoin, is also an acne drug.

Isotretinoin Usage:

Treating severe acne in patients who do not respond to other medicines. It may also be used for other conditions as determined by your doctor.
Isotretinoin is a retinoid. It works by reducing skin oil production, changing the characteristics of the skin oil, and preventing abnormal hardening of the skin.

How to use isotretinoin capsule?

Read the Medication Guide provided by your pharmacist before you start using isotretinoin and each time you get a refill. Read and sign a Patient Information/Informed Consent form before you start taking this medication. If you have any questions about isotretinoin, consult your doctor or pharmacist before taking the medication.

Swallow capsules whole. Do not crush or chew them. Isotretinoin is usually taken twice daily for 15-20 εβδομάδες, or as directed by your doctor. Directions for most generic forms of isotretinoin state that it should be taken with meals. Ωστόσο, the FDA has indicated that the Absorica brand may be taken with or without food. Isotretinoin Dosage:

The dose of isotretinoin patients receive is dependent on their weight and the severity of the condition. A second course may be required. Efficacy appears to be related to the cumulative dose of isotretinoin taken, with a total cumulative dose over each course of 120–150 mg/kg used as a guideline.

Nearly all patients achieve initial clearing of acne during a normal course of isotretinoin therapy. 90% of patients achieve excellent clearance of their acne after a cumulative dose of 150 mg/kg.

Lower-dosage treatments, such as 10–20 mg/day (approximately half the high dosage treatments above), can also be effective, with greatly diminished side effects.However, such lower dosage courses may be associated with higher relapse rates, requiring additional courses, especially if not taken for enough time.
